Termine tedesco per "surrogato", "sostituto". Il surrogato è solitamente di qualità inferiore al prodotto sostituito.

Ogni autoritratto è un surrogato dell'artista. Ma ogni autoritratto è anche un pezzo unico originale, dunque l'artista è un loro surrogato? Ogni autoritratto Ersatz è surrogato degli altri dipinti della serie e anche dell'artista, e viceversa.

Every self portrait is a substitute and the real thing is me. But every self portrait is something unique, so maybe I am an Ersatz of my self portraits as well. Every Ersatz self portrait is the Ersatz of every other self portrait of the series.
