L'espressione "Lusus Naturae" fu usata dai naturalisti a partire dal XVI secolo per classificare quei fenomeni che apparentemente non seguono l'ordine naturale delle cose. Non è un'espressione felice: ci evoca scenari inquietanti, in cui ciò che esce dalla norma ci appare respingente e distante. L'uso che dell'espressione si fa nella lingua italiana ("Scherzo della natura") è principalmente in senso negativo. Eppure, a dirla tutta, anche questa ragazza tutt'altro che inquietante rientrerebbe nella definizione: ibrido tra donna e pianta, dalla sua testa nascono numerosi ramoscelli, una rigogliosa foresta in miniatura al centro dei quali si sviluppa una fiammella inestinguibile. D'altronde, tra gli scherzi della natura degli studiosi del Seicento rientravano anche i fossili, che avevano la sola colpa di non avere una collocazione nelle conoscenze scientifiche di allora.

"Lusus Naturae" is an expression used by scientists during the 16th-17th centuries to describe a phenomenon that didn't follow the Nature's rules. The expression wasn't used in a positive way: it evokes us something unsettling, distant and repulsive. Even the modern use of the term ("Freak of nature") has negative implications. Nevertheless, this girl too could be described as a Lusus Naturae: she's an hybrid between a woman and a plant, from her head sprout many twigs which form a miniature forest that protects a quenchless flame. As a matter of facts, the 16th century's scholars considered fossils as a Lusus Naturae too, just because they couldn't collocate them with any known species.
