Ho sempre amato l'heavy metal ed ho una predilezione particolare per quello degli anni '80. Le ragioni sono molteplici: i riff orecchiabili, gli assoli di chitarra galvanizzanti e, soprattutto, i creativi e allucinanti costumi dei componenti di certe band. Basta nominare gruppi come Kiss, Twisted Sisters e Poison, tanto per limitarsi ad alcuni, che vengono subito in mente maschere, colori assurdi e capigliature oltre i limiti di sicurezza. E' il periodo del cosiddetto Glam Metal, che affonda le radici (soprattutto per quanto riguarda l'abbigliamento) nel Glam Rock del decennio precedente (Bowie, Genesis ecc.) ed è caratterizzato da un sound duro e orecchiabile allo stesso tempo, unito ad una presenza scenica eccessiva e strabiliante.
La grande creatività visiva propria dei performer di questo periodo è un aspetto molto affascinante della concezione metal dello show sul palco, con i componenti della band che, una volta vestiti i panni della gimmick, si trasformano completamente come fanno i supereroi. L'uso della gimmick è uno stratagemma già visto in altri ambiti, come ad esempio il wrestling e la lucha libre messicana, e lascia allo spettatore tutta l'energia della musica e il mistero dato dall'aura quasi fantastica dei costumi.
Quando ho deciso di dedicare un dipinto proprio ai metallari anni '80, avevo in mente esattamente tutto l'immaginario che vi era dietro a questi gruppi: il face painting e i capelli sparati in aria come i personaggi dei fumetti, l'aspetto androgino di certi frontmen e i colori vivaci che hanno caratterizzato l'intero decennio. “Metallaro #1” ha così preso forma ed è stato arricchito, come tutti i precedenti lavori, dalla realtà aumentata.

I'm absolutely fond of heavy metal and I love dearly the 80s bands: the reasons are their pleasant riffs, the powerful guitar solos and above all the musicians' creative and crazy outfits. You just have to say Kiss, Twisted Sisters and Poison, and your mind will recall immediately masks, mad colours and hair gone beyond the safety limits. This is the period of the so called Glam Metal, which is inspired by the 70s Glam Rock (Bowie, Genesis etc.), especially considering the bands outfits. Glam metal is well recognizable for its sound, both pleasant and hard at the same time, and by an astonishing and excessive stage presence of the bands.
The 80s performers' great creativity is one of the most remarkable aspect of the metal stage show “philosophy”, with musicians completely transformed in their gimmicks, like superheroes do. The use of a gimmick is not a novelty itself and has been widely used in other kind of disciplines (i.e. wrestling or Mexican lucha libre), but gives to spectators both the energy of music and the mistery behind costumes.
When I decided to dedicate a painting to the 80s metalheads, I had exactly this in my mind: the face painting and the crazy hairstyles, the androginous features of certain frontmen and the vivid colours of that era. “Metallaro #1” (Metalhead #1) has been just finished and has been enriched with augmented reality, like the other pieces of the series
